Kosovo's parliament has unanimously endorsed a declaration of independence from Serbia, in a historic session.
Celebrations went on into the night after Prime Minister Hashim Thaci promised a democracy that respected the rights of all ethnic communities. Serbia's PM denounced the US for helping create a "false state".
A split later emerged at the Security Council, when Russia said there was no basis for changing a 1999 resolution which handed Kosovo to the UN. Seven Western countries said it was quite clear the situation had moved on.

I hope everything turns out okay for Kosovo. But, breaking away always makes someone angry.
Don't we still have troops in Kosovo left over from back in the late 1990s?
We have troops all over the Balkans, as does the EU and UN. It's a mess, basically the Serbians ran the whole region for decades with the help of Soviet control.
Now the Albanians (many in Kosovo) and Macedonians and Bosnians and others all have hate and bitterness built up toward the Serbs. I fear a lot of terror and violence on both parts.
One important side note, the War on Terror that keeps us safer here, may also be playing a role in these affairs. I'm doing some digging to see which side is becoming more firmly anti-American and Muslim jihadist.
